The realization of unconditional love.

Last week my fourteen year old son had an experience he described as God entering his body.  He said he was in spirituality class at school and he was filled with a profound love for everyone, even people who had hurt him. He felt he received a message that we are all here to love everyone unconditionally. The experience lasted for about two hours. He was so excited when he told us about this. I was excited for him too and it got me thinking that my whole twenty plus years of spiritual seeking was really about this exact realization. I was looking for unconditional love. Not the ups and downs of the ego or the validation we seek from others. But the realization that we were always deeply loved by life, that the love we were seeking was inside of us the whole time. What a simple concept unconditional love is and yet so elusive in our conditioned minds. What took me much seeking, he realized on a random Tuesday.

In this unconditional love, we are both the lover and the loved. We are the mother and the father and the child. We are the creator and the receiver of life. We are held and we are the ones who are holding. And we know that this love exists no matter what, waiting patiently for our awakening to it.

The day after this realization, my son was back to his typical fourteen year old antics.  When he was giving his brother a hard time, I reminded him of the message he received and he laughed.  “We can’t be that way all of the time, mama,” he said. It’s true, we remember and then we forget. And then we remember again.
